European Fish: The Exploitation of Maghreb Fisherwomen

General information

Project name: El peix europeu: explotació de les pescadores del Magrib
Country: Catalonia/Spain
Timeline: From 15 January 2026 to 15 April 2027
Lead Organisation: Fundació Solidaritat Universitat de Barcelona

Summary of Action

The proposed action stems from a clear diagnosis: the invisibility and precarious laboUr conditions of women fishers in the Maghreb, particularly in Morocco and Egypt. Despite their essential role within the fisheries value chain, these women operate under vulnerable circumstances, frequently without legal recognition or social protection, and with limited representation in media and academic discourses. These inequalities are closely linked to European consumption patterns, as a significant share of the fish and seafood consumed in the European Union originates from these regions, thereby underscoring North–South interdependencies and shared responsibilities.

To address this situation, the project will undertake a feminist-oriented journalistic inquiry, conducted by two journalists specialised in human rights and transformative communication. The findings will be disseminated through multiple formats (articles, audiovisual reports, podcasts) and published in Catalan, Spanish, Maghreb, and international outlets, thus ensuring wide and diverse dissemination.

Building on this journalistic production, a traveling exhibition and a series of educational activities will be implemented in five public Catalan universities, with the objective of raising awareness and mobilizing university students. This process will be reinforced by a comprehensive multichannel communication strategy and by alliances with media, civil society, and academic organizations that will amplify the project’s impact.

The action is structured around specific results:

  • a multi-format journalistic investigation including direct testimonies from women fishers in the Maghreb;
  • a traveling exhibition and five educational sessions reaching at least 2,500 students, supported by didactic resources designed to promote critical thinking;
  • a communication strategy securing a minimum of 50,000 social media impressions and 5,000 audiovisual views.

European citizens are engaged from two perspectives: as consumers of a product whose origins are marked by gender and labor inequalities, and as members of the university community called to play an active role in building a more inclusive, equal, and sustainable world. Accordingly, the action combines research, communication, and education with the overarching objective of generating critical knowledge, transforming social imaginaries, and fostering civic engagement in support of global justice.
