Summary of Action
“Listening for Change” explores how sound and music can connect people across cultures and deepen understanding of global challenges such as inequality, climate change, exclusion, and cultural loss. The project treats listening as an active and meaningful practice that can foster empathy and critical awareness.
In Flanders, young people and vulnerable groups take part in workshops, film screenings, and creative labs focused on sonic ecology. Participants record and reflect on their own sound environments, exploring questions about power, belonging, and the relationship between people and their surroundings.
These local experiences are linked to soundscapes from the Global South, including Indigenous communities in India and refugee communities in Mauritania. Through this exchange, participants gain new perspectives and engage with forms of knowledge rooted in lived experience, often overlooked in dominant narratives.
A key international component is the collaboration with the Tuareg collective Tadiazt. Together, they will build a mobile music studio in the M’berra refugee camp in Mauritania. This space enables young people to express themselves creatively, develop skills, and strengthen community ties. At the same time, a participatory documentary will capture the role of music in experiences of displacement and resilience.
By combining artistic creation with reflection and dialogue, the project encourages participants to become active storytellers and engaged citizens. It builds bridges between communities and shows how listening can be a starting point for collective action towards a more just and sustainable world.
