Summary of Action
“WeDecolonize” is a student-led initiative that empowers BIPOC students in Flemish higher education to become active changemakers within their institutions. It responds to the reality that many of these students still experience limited representation and voice in academic spaces.
The project is built around four interconnected pillars. First, it creates a safe and supportive space where participants can share experiences and foster a sense of belonging. Second, it deepens knowledge by exploring themes such as colonial legacies, racism, and gender inequality. Third, it strengthens community through training in communication, policy influence, and event organisation. Finally, it encourages public action, culminating in a student-led Summer School.
Participants follow a year-long trajectory that begins with a preparatory weekend focused on group building and defining a shared direction. Throughout the programme, they engage in activities such as reading circles, film screenings, trainings, and networking events. Individual coaching supports their personal development.
The Summer School serves as the highlight of the project. During this event, students take ownership of academic space through workshops, panels, and artistic performances, addressing issues of racism and gender inequality while developing leadership and organisational skills.
The project concludes with reflection and a collective publication, while an alumni network ensures that knowledge and impact continue beyond the project period. By centring intersectional perspectives and lived experiences, “WeDecolonize” contributes to more inclusive, equitable, and responsive higher education environments.
