Summary of Action
Women in Mozambique face multiple barriers when trying to access basic health services. Cultural norms place men as the decision-makers in households, preventing women from prioritizing their own health. The consequences go beyond delayed care: infections that could be treated become chronic, pregnancies without follow-up put women’s lives at risk, and conditions like vision problems end up causing permanent disability. In Inhambane, almost one in sixteen people over the age of fifty are blind, with women disproportionately affected and with less access to surgery, according to the University of Cape Town.
Mobile caravans led by women bring healthcare to some of the most isolated communities. They offer cataract screenings, glasses, and treatment to those who would otherwise remain in the dark, while moving through a social landscape defined by gender inequality. We will follow transformative stories of restored or denied sight, using these personal journeys to explore deeper issues of gender, inequality, and resilience amid climate pressures.
The action we propose is a mixture of journalistic coverage, social media campaigns, interactive seminars, and educational resources to create awareness and critical understanding about the unequal access to healthcare faced by women, with Mozambique as an example of a global problem.
By using accessible storytelling, participatory dialogue, and by targeting less engaged groups, the methodologies ensure that participants not only gain knowledge but also reflect on their own gender roles and responsibilities, and take action to change it. This approach encourages citizens to move beyond awareness, developing the capacity to critically analyze inequalities and engage in constructive action.
First, the international media outlets we will collaborate with (Catalonia, Europe, and international platforms) ensure that diverse target audiences are reached, and the innovative formats (long-form interactive, short film, radio and social media reports…) will create a transmedia experience where video, infographics, maps, and data visualizations come together in a single scrollytelling narrative, based on global justice. This will allow audiences to move between intimate testimonies and structural analysis, and to reflect on their own privileges and take shared responsibility for a more inclusive world.
All this will be accompanied by an online campaign that will challenge common misconceptions about women’s access to health care, targeting the Catalan youth, to foster dialogue and engagement.
On the other hand, film forums/workshops at Catalan universities and community centers will promote critical reflection on gender roles and inequality in access to health. Participatory dynamics and the use of digital resources will allow young people not only to inform themselves but to become activists and multipliers in their own environment. To this end, we will be working with civil society organizations that regularly operate in these contexts, such as Homes Igualitaris.
At the same time, the training courses that our organization already runs in the Global South on harmful masculinities will continue to strengthen the capacities of local actors to engage in their own process of change, working with local partnerships in Mozambique and our field staff.
