Finance on Stage
General information
Project name: Finances a escena
Country: Catalonia/Spain
Timeline: From 1 February 2026 to 30 March 2027
Organisation: FETS – Finançament ètic i solidari
Summary of Action
The current capitalist financial system perpetuates global inequalities, concentrates economic power, and promotes speculative financial practices that particularly affect women, young people, and marginalized groups, both in the Global North and South. European youth, moreover, perceive finance as a complex and distant field, dominated by speculative and male-oriented models, with a lack of real and accessible alternatives.
To address this reality, the project is structured around three main goals:
First, to increase the knowledge and engagement of young people in Catalonia in activism for global economic justice and ethical and solidarity finance in their territory. A series of activities will promote critical reflection on the financial system through theatre as an emerging pedagogical tool, based on experiential learning, critical debate, and collective knowledge building. This approach allows young people to explore the everyday impacts of financial structures, while also understanding the range of alternatives in their environment, which represent opportunities for mobilization and transformation of economic and financial relations.
The first phase of the project will focus on creating a group of young activists who will receive in-depth training in Theatre of the Oppressed, identify the central conflict, and work on the dramaturgical proposal. During this stage, young participants will deepen their understanding of the impacts of the financial system, but also of the ethical finance initiatives present in their environment, and how they can engage with them in their daily lives. At the same time, through rehearsals and the design of the forum dynamic, they will reflect on the barriers and limits young people face when imagining alternative financial relationships. Finally, the premiere will take place at the School of Activism and Ethical Finance, where the group of activists will be able to make final contributions and adapt the play for use in the school’s awareness-raising campaign.
Secondly, in order to strengthen a critical approach to economic education in Barcelona, the project foresees at least 10 performances of the play. These events will be followed by a forum in which young audiences can share whether they identify with the scenes and how they would imagine real alternatives. Performances are also expected to take place in non-formal education settings such as youth associations, community centers, fairs, and other city networks and movements.
Finally, the project seeks to increase the critical awareness of young people in Catalonia about ethical finances, promoting a change in attitudes, consumption habits, and their relationship with the financial system. Through a digital communication strategy and collaborations with youth media channels, the project aims to reach a wider audience. This online space will allow young people to interact, learn about, and reflect on the alternatives available in their environment, and to explore different levels of engagement.
