Summary of Action
Global Landscapes is an innovative project that aims to transform how diversity is perceived in multicultural urban contexts, positioning it as a driver of social cohesion rather than a source of division. In the city of Vic, where nearly 30% of the population is of foreign origin, residents often coexist without meaningful interaction. This is particularly true in the southern neighborhoods, which are marked by stigma, inequality, and spatial segregation, and are frequently perceived negatively by the rest of the city.
The project seeks to shift these perceptions by promoting opportunities for connection, recognition, and mutual understanding. Through a process rooted in community engagement, critical reflection, and creative expression, Global Landscapes aims to strengthen local identity, activate civic participation, and lay the foundation for a more inclusive, conscious, and engaged citizenry.
The action unfolds in three interconnected phases:
- Phase I: Getting to Know Each Other (January–May 2026) focuses on improving knowledge and awareness of Vic’s neighborhoods, especially those in the south. Through four exploratory walks, co-organized with local neighborhood associations (AAVV), residents are invited to rediscover their city from the perspective of its communities. These walks are followed by a workshop on critical cartography, where participants collectively analyze their urban environments and co-create maps reflecting diverse social, cultural, and care-related dimensions. This phase challenges stereotypes and fosters empathy through experiential learning.
- Phase II: Telling Our Stories (May–December 2026) uses storytelling to deepen understanding and transform perceptions. A perception study gathers data on how residents view the city and its neighborhoods. In parallel, participants—particularly young people—take part in two creative workshops: one focused on letter writing and narrative development, and another on video-podcast production. These formats allow participants to articulate their experiences of Vic’s urban life in personal and collective ways. The phase concludes with a participatory evaluation that identifies five priority spaces in the city in need of community-led transformation.
- Phase III: Agents of Change (January–March 2027) empowers participants to lead actions that foster inclusion and dialogue. A volunteer core group (Grupo Motor), formed from earlier phases, plans and implements two intercultural events in the selected spaces. These citizen-led events include public exhibitions, performances, and community actions that celebrate diversity and promote intercultural understanding.
The expected results include improved perceptions of southern neighborhoods among Vic’s residents, stronger social cohesion, and a more engaged local population. The project seeks to generate a ripple effect: activating individual and collective agency while transforming public narratives about diversity.
To ensure impact beyond the project’s duration, Global Landscapes will produce an open-access digital platform and an educational toolkit, developed with the Pilarín Bayés Library and the Osona Pedagogical Resource Center. These resources will allow the project’s methodologies and materials to be reused and adapted in other educational and community contexts. Local media partner El 9 Nou will support visibility, public engagement, and long-term dissemination.
Ultimately, Global Landscapes offers a replicable, anti-racist, and inclusive model for urban coexistence grounded in shared narratives and citizen-led action.
