Hvor jazzen kommer fra
General information
Project name: Hvor jazzen kommer fra
Country: Denmark
Timeline: From 1 March 2025 to 1 November 2026
Lead Organisation: JazzDanmark
Summary of Action
JazzDanmark, in collaboration with experienced journalists, is developing “Where Jazz Comes From”, an engaging documentary educational resource and podcast series. Rooted in Cape Verde’s musical history and framed by broader perspectives on African colonial history, the project invites a wide Danish audience to explore the origins of jazz and the far-reaching consequences of slavery for developing countries. Using music culture as a catalyst and centering voices from the Global South, the aim is to deepen the target audience’s knowledge of and engagement with African colonial history—its global significance in the past and present—and thereby elevate their position in the engagement pyramid regarding similar themes of sustainable development and global challenges in other developing countries.
The educational material will be quality-assured and published for upper secondary schools in Denmark by Gyldendal (potentially reaching 50,000 Danes), while the podcast series will be released by DR (potentially reaching 25,000 Danes).
