Water – do not take it granted

General information

Project name: Water – do not take it granted
Country: Latvia
Timeline: From 4 June 2025 to 30 November 2025
Lead Organisation: Latvian Crayfish and Fish Farmers Association

Summary of Action

Climate change has caused water shortages in Latvia, leading to the death of farmed fish in rivers during summer. Raising awareness of water scarcity across the EU is critical for promoting sustainable water management and preventing severe societal and economic consequences. Learning from African practices, such as rainwater harvesting, efficient irrigation systems like drip irrigation, and community-driven water-sharing initiatives, can inspire effective solutions and foster resilience.

A Latvian project aims to highlight the importance of preparedness and sustainable water use through seminars that share real-life stories and examples from Rwanda. These face-to-face events will focus on practical solutions and foster dialogue on water conservation. The primary audience includes members of the Latvian Association of Crayfish and Fish Farmers, who have directly experienced water shortages. They will be encouraged to share what they learn within their communities.

Another seminar will target rural advisory consultants who work closely with farmers in remote areas, equipping them to spread the message further. A third seminar will engage youth at a school, linking water conservation to daily actions and building awareness for the future. This project not only addresses immediate water challenges but also serves as a foundation for long-term collaboration between Latvian and Rwandese small-scale fish farmers. By exchanging knowledge and practices, the initiative aims to foster innovation and community resilience, promoting global sustainable development goals, including climate action and zero hunger.
