Hands-on Justice: Engaging Young Men in Change
General information
Project name: Hands-on Justice: Engaging Young Men in Change
Country: Lithuania
Timeline: From 1 April 2026 to 31 January 2027
Lead Organisation: VšĮ Prirašytos Rankos
Summary of Action
In many small cities, volunteering in the criminal justice sector is limited and predominantly undertaken by women, reflecting broader gender norms around unpaid work. This project aims to attract and engage less-involved young men to actively volunteer and create positive change within the criminal justice system, contributing to gender equality and more diverse community participation.
The action will involve targeted outreach and public events to raise awareness and interest among young men, alongside the production of podcasts co-created by current volunteers and incarcerated individuals to inspire engagement. A structured selection process will identify motivated participants, who will then undergo a three-day training to prepare for their volunteering roles.
By the end of the project, at least 10 previously less-involved young men will begin meaningful volunteer activities within the criminal justice system, leading initiatives based on their own strengths and interests, and at least one will participate in the podcast project as a multiplier. Additional activities include three public events and the release of three podcast episodes to engage the broader community.
Expected results include increased male volunteer participation, strengthened community networks supporting rehabilitation, and contributions toward transforming gender norms around unpaid work. This project demonstrates a replicable approach to engaging underrepresented groups in volunteering, fostering inclusion, and enhancing the effectiveness of community-based justice programs.
