Summary of Action

The “Truth about Refugees” project aimed to foster greater empathy among young people toward refugees by combining education with social engagement. It included a series of educational workshops, virtual meetings with refugees, and mini-campaign projects that helped participants better grasp the challenges faced by refugees and the complexities of migration.

These activities were designed to cultivate critical thinking, reduce stereotypes, and build empathy for people from different cultures. A core aspect of the project was the creation of information and campaign materials by young people, actively involving them in counteracting prejudice and enhancing their social engagement.

The project contributed to a significant increase in young people’s knowledge of refugee issues, including a correct understanding of the definition of a refugee and the causes of migration. There was a marked reduction in simplistic stereotypes and misconceptions, particularly those equating refugees with economic migrants or a threat to security.

Participants developed cognitive and emotional empathy – the proportion of pupils with low levels of empathy fell by more than half. The project led to a decline in exclusionary attitudes and an increase in acceptance of refugees’ equal access to rights and social services. There was a noticeable increase in willingness to cooperate and engage with refugee communities. At the same time, the activities did not weaken the participants’ national identity, but rather reinforced its affirmative, inclusive nature.

The project effectively supported the development of a sense of shared responsibility for an open, united society based on the values of sustainable development.
