Summary of Action
The project was addressed to young people aged 14–19 living in Kętrzyn, a town in north-eastern Poland surrounded by post-industrial areas and located away from large urban centers. Kętrzyn faces a high level of unemployment, and many young residents express a desire to move to larger cities, which further deepens demographic, social, and economic challenges. The youth are largely excluded from modern forms of social activity. Local institutional offerings are primarily directed toward seniors, leaving the youth environment – apart from school activities – isolated and neglected. Moreover, the city does not involve secondary school students in its educational initiatives on environmental protection. Municipal authorities concentrate on objectives such as combating pollution while overlooking broader global issues and development challenges.
The project contributed to increasing students’ knowledge of global challenges, particularly those related to sustainable development, equality, and social justice. Students who had previously had limited exposure to these topics developed more informed and open attitudes toward European and global issues.
Their sense of responsibility for their surroundings and understanding of the role of young people as active citizens of the EU increased. The project also strengthened students’ engagement in social and educational activities at the local level, fostering attitudes of solidarity, cooperation, and shared responsibility for the future. Students developed key competencies, such as critical thinking, civic and social competences, and the ability to collaborate and engage in dialogue.
It is important to emphasize that this project was entirely planned and implemented by a youth group.
