Summary of Action

Over the centuries, the Białowieża Forest has become one of the most important natural sites in Europe. Due to its location, history, shifting borders, wars, and conflicts, it has also grown into a powerful symbol. The forest reflects, on a micro scale, many of the challenges faced globally. Its example allows for the exploration of both local and worldwide issues. By focusing on border areas, it becomes possible to address pressing social and political problems and to create space for shared reflection.

The project “Together at the Border – The Complexity of the Polish-Belarusian Border Situation in the Białowieża Forest Region – History and Present Day”  helped to increase participants’ understanding of the global context of the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border, particularly the links between migration, security, climate change and cross-border nature conservation, as well as the “silent war” in Belarus.

By combining academic, artistic and local perspectives, the project fostered a critical understanding of the complexity of global challenges and their local consequences. Project participants developed attitudes of empathy, responsibility and openness to dialogue across social, cultural and national divides. The project created a safe space for discussing experiences of life on the border and the emotions associated with the migration crisis and the militarisation of the region.

As a result of the events, a sense of shared responsibility for the protection of nature, human rights and social relations in a global context was strengthened. The project also stimulated a willingness for further civic and educational engagement, including through the initiation of further activities aimed at local communities and educational institutions.
