Summary of Action

Over the centuries, the Białowieża Forest has become one of the most important natural sites in Europe. Due to its location, history, shifting borders, wars, and conflicts, it has also grown into a powerful symbol. The forest reflects, on a micro scale, many of the challenges faced globally. Its example allows for the exploration of both local and worldwide issues. By focusing on border areas, it becomes possible to address pressing social and political problems and to create space for shared reflection.

Within the project “Together at the Border – The Complexity of the Polish-Belarusian Border Situation in the Białowieża Forest Region – History and Present Day,” a series of events will be organized to highlight topics such as culture, nature protection during wartime, and the challenges of life in a borderland. The region, shaped by political decisions of the European Union and Poland, has turned into a political frontier where European governments pursue their agendas.

The project will also approach the situation from a global perspective, focusing on the climate crisis, humanitarian issues, and the migration of people, plants, and animals. Activities will be carried out in cooperation with local initiatives and the Belarusian minority.

Planned events include:

  • a discussion on borders,
  • a lecture on nature conservation during wars,
  • a meeting with humanitarian organizations,
  • sessions on the identity of the Podlasie region, including language and heritage,
  • a dance performance by the School in Hajnówka,
  • forest walks with professional guides.

The conversations and discussions will be recorded and transformed into a series of podcasts, ensuring wider access to the content and extending the impact of the project.
