Peace Players

General information

Project name: Peace Players
Country: The Netherlands
Timeline: From 1 March 2025 to 1 December 2025
Lead Organisation: Stichting Steun voor Oudalan

Summary of Action

Young people from the province of Utrecht are invited to participate in sports activities such as football and kickboxing together with asylum seekers, under the guidance of experienced trainers and mentors.

Before these training sessions start, students from the secondary school in Vianen will receive guest lessons at school about migration and human rights. During these sessions, asylum seekers will share their personal migration stories and the reasons behind them. Additionally, a guest from Burkina Faso will speak about projects in his country that promote social cohesion and peace.

After the training sessions, group discussions are held where the young people and asylum seekers get to know each other and exchange ideas about how people can live together in peace. This initiative helps to break down prejudices and fosters a sense of connection.

The issue is that young people are often exposed to negative portrayals of asylum seekers and migration as major problems for Dutch society, while they typically have no personal contact with asylum seekers.

The goal is to use the support of experienced trainers to foster connections and understanding by getting to know one another and engaging in sports together.

The expected outcomes are that young people will become more open to the situation of asylum seekers, leading to positive perceptions based on their own experiences. Every week, they participate in sports and discussions under professional guidance at a sports facility in Vianen. The young participants (age 15-25) are invited through schools, youth work organisations, and sports clubs.
