General information

Project name: Stories from Home: Diaspora Youth Voices and Solutions for Climate Justice
Country: The Netherlands
Timeline: From 16 February 2026 to 30 April 2027
Lead Organisation: Stichting Somali Millennials (SOMI)

Summary of Action

The Action bridges the gap between European perceptions of climate change and the lived realities of African communities facing severe impacts such as droughts, floods, and displacement. Many EU youth view climate change through local or abstract lenses, overlooking global inequalities and the disproportionate burdens on African communities, limiting their understanding of climate justice and global solidarity.

Its purpose is to deepen Dutch university students’ understanding while strengthening leadership among African diaspora youth in the Netherlands. By bringing these groups together, the Action fosters global citizenship, cross-cultural dialogue, and shared learning, transforming distant climate narratives into relatable stories that inspire empathy, critical reflection, and informed engagement.

The Action targets three key outcomes: heightened awareness of global climate injustices among EU youth, enhanced storytelling and leadership skills for diaspora youth, and improved collaboration through co-created ideas for climate adaptation and community resilience.

To achieve this, the Action implements participatory activities such as training diaspora youth in ethical storytelling, producing short documentaries based on community experiences, hosting interactive university workshops, and running an innovation lab where mixed youth teams co-design practical, community-focused climate solutions that can be shared more widely across Europe and African communities.
