Summary of Action

Most Dutch people receive little information about Africa. Most news items are negative and related to disasters or coups d’état. Success stories hardly get attention in the media.

In September 2025, Rwanda will host the first World Championships of Cycling ever organised on the African continent. For cycling fans, following this most important one-day cycling race in the year, this event will be a unique opportunity to get acquainted with Rwanda and Africa in general.

By elaborating online content (articles, vlogs and podcasts), we will share positive and well-informed information about developments in Africa to change the mostly negative and one-sided image of our target group.

With this project we want to contribute to better information provision about Rwanda and Africa in general and contribute to a better informed and more realistic image of Africa. We will connect cycling fans and let them see the real Africa.

The cycling World Championships provide endless opportunities to make links between cycling and important themes of sustainable development and the role of Africa, Rwanda and the Netherlands specifically, in these transitions.

Besides developing an online platform to publish the online content, we will organise a physical pub quiz and a side event to the “Global Citizen Day”. We aim to increase awareness and involvement among cycling fans by using the Cycling World Cup as a platform to change the target group’s perception of Africa.
