Equal Trade: Nederlandse Jongeren in Actie voor Ghanese Cacaoboeren

General information

Project name: Equal Trade: Nederlandse Jongeren in Actie voor Ghanese Cacaoboeren
Country: The Netherlands
Timeline: From 1 February 2025 to 31 January 2026
Lead Organisation: Stichting Africa In Motion

Summary of Action

Problem: Global economic inequality in the cocoa value chain severely impacts the livelihoods of cocoa farmers, particularly in Ghana. Current trade practices perpetuate poverty, child labour, and environmental degradation. The need to address these structural issues is urgent, and to engage young people, the next generation of leaders and consumers, in finding solutions.

Objective: The initiative aims to raise awareness among Dutch youth (ages 16-25) about economic inequality in the cocoa value chain and empower them to act. Through storytelling, educational sessions, and a petition advocating for the Equal Trade model, the project seeks to ensure fair revenue sharing, allowing cocoa farmers to benefit directly from chocolate sales.

Expected Results:

  • Collect 5,000 signatures for a petition supporting the Equal Trade model, presented to Dutch policymakers.
  • Reach 50,000 youth via social media and engage 5,000 directly through workshops and events.
  • Host a final event with 200 participants to amplify cocoa farmers’ voices and launch the petition.

Activities:

  • Research and Preparation (Feb-Mar 2025): Partner organisations gather farmers’ stories and develop educational materials.
  • Content Creation (Apr-May 2025): Produce videos, social media posts, and workshop content.
  • Awareness Campaign (Aug-Nov 2025): Launch social media campaigns and conduct workshops in schools and universities.
  • Final Event and Petition Launch (Nov 2025): Organise an interactive event to present farmers’ stories and launch the petition.
  • Petition Promotion (Nov 2025-Jan 2026): Actively collect signatures online and offline.

Long-Term Impact: This action will empower youth to advocate for equitable trade systems, creating lasting awareness and inspiring systemic change in the cocoa industry.
